Candy Crush Jelly Saga will be the third installment in the Candy Crush Saga series which has become one of the most popular casual social game series of all time. Candy Crush Jelly is produced by King.com Ltd. who always raises the bar when it comes to their franchise games like Candy Crush Soda, and the original Candy Crush Saga. King released Candy Crush Jelly Saga worldwide in January 2016, and it has followed their formula of adding a new episode of levels every two weeks.
Candy Crush Jelly Saga is a level based match-3 game where you switch pieces of candy on a game board to make matches. Match three means you have to match at least 3 candies of the same color together, but you are also rewarded with special candies when you match 4 or more together. This is one of the most common types of puzzle game on mobile devices, and King always seems to find a way to bring something new to the genre.
The story line for Jelly Saga is we follow Jenny the young adventurous yeti girl through the tree-tops in the Candy Kingdom. Yeti from the original Candy Crush is Jenny’s uncle, but she is on her own travelling through the Jelly Saga episodes. The Jelly Queen is the other main character whose goal is to stop Jenny from spreading her Jelly.
Candy Crush Jelly Saga levels are similar to Soda Saga levels without the soda. For now the pieces are the same, the special candies are the same, and the name jelly comes from the jam levels we know from Soda. All in all players who are familiar with Candy Crush Soda will be comfortable with the game mechanics in Jelly Saga.
The frosting levels no longer hide candy bears though, under the ice in Jelly we now find pufflers. Pufflers are a bit hard to explain but one of the big differences is that they can move around after you make your match. When the frosting is connected and spread across the board the critters can move, and can even end up under blockers. This changes up the strategy to add a level of planning to try to corner the pufflers and collect them.
Instead of bubble bears which you float above the candy string in Soda Saga we get monklings in Candy Crush Jelly. Monklings are hatched when you collect an amount of orange candies, and then you have to move them down to licorice rope which is Jelly’s version of the candy string. This is a fun twist on an already good idea that makes it seem brand new.
When King brings out a new Candy Crush game the big question is why do they need another one when the original and Soda are still so popular? The short and easy answer is that they always find a way to build off what players already love, and bring something brand new into an already winning formula. Candy Crush Jelly Saga is good enough to stand on its own while complimenting the previous two titles. This means dedicated candy crushers will love it, but it also raises the casual puzzle gaming bar to a new level.
Candy Crush Jelly Saga Boss Modes
The biggest and most exciting new feature in Candy Crush Jelly Saga is definitely the Boss modes. At the time of writing this article Jelly has three bosses, but we expect that more will be added as the game evolves. For now there is Jelly Queen, Cupcake Carl, and Liquorice Larry. Bosses are just what they sound like – game characters you have to defeat to complete the level.
The mother of all bosses is the Jelly Queen who shows up on jelly levels. The Queen is the first boss we meet, and she really is a feature that we have never seen before in a King game or any other casual puzzle game that we know of. When playing these levels the player takes a turn making a move, and then the boss makes a move. It is a head to head format in which the player has to carry out a goal before they can move on. In Jelly Queen levels the goal is to spread more of your reddish-purple jelly, than the Queen who spreads a green jelly.
The Jelly Queen tries to spread her jam to cover more of the board than you cover. You spread yours, and whoever has more at the end wins the level. You can also cover all of her jam to end the level at that point. When you make special candies this stuns the Queen and awards you an extra move which can be a big advantage. At the same time if she makes a special she will also be awarded an extra move before you get to go again.
In pufflers levels Cupcake Carl is the boss. The format is the same, but here you try to collect more pufflers than Carl before you run out of moves. This makes for an interesting back and forth which can get a little frustrating at times. At the same time beating Carl is a lot of fun so the reward is worth the effort.
The boss of the monklings is named Liquorice Larry. Larry hatches his monklings by collecting blue candies so you are in a race to hatch yours and get them to the candy string before he does. Larry is frustrating too, but it is in a different way than the others so we really like these modes and are excited to see how they develop new ones over time.
